The Base Chakra, also known as the Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine. It is our energetic foundation, representing our needs. It is the first out of seven major chakras on the body. It is grounded in the Earth and it has a strong connection to reality. This is where your feeling of survival and instinct are located. It also is connected to money, family, and community. When it is unbalanced and blocked, it can cause these symptoms:
- Feeling low of energy
- Alienated, isolated
- You can find yourself easily angered
- Feelings of worry and anxiety
- Make you feel the need to be aggressive, pushy, and or manipulative
- Can cause feelings of being unwelcomed or unwanted
- You can feel that you have to sacrifice your integrity or dignity to fulfill material needs
It’s also possible to have an overactive and underactive Base Chakra. When it is overactive, you can experience feelings of
- Paranoia- a disconnection of reality. Feeling like others are against you.
- Mania- periods of extreme excitement. Also a disconnection to reality.
When it is under active, you can experience feelings related to depression.
What can cause an imbalance of your Base Chakra? There are things that can be tied to your childhood. Maybe you had an unsafe environment, where it was stressful and chaotic. You could have been neglected and had unreliable parents or caregivers. Growing up in multiple foster homes, orphanages and also being suddenly uprooted from a home or school without warning. As you grow older, there can be other reasons. Maybe you had your physical self threatened from an accident or trauma. The stress of living paycheck to paycheck. Threat of losing a job, or losing a family member. Even things like marriage, having a baby, or getting a divorce can cause an imbalance. The stress of starting a new job, being away from home and family, as well as going to college can cause an imbalance.
These things can cause health issues, as your Base Chakra is governed by your adrenal gland. It can affect your bones, nails, and teeth. As well as your spinal column, colon, rectum and prostate gland. As well has affect your blood and cell building.
There are multiple ways to balance your Base Chakra. You can do positive affirmations. Say these daily before getting ready for the day, or during meditation.
- I am safe
- I am secure
- I am grounded
- I belong in this world
- I have all I need
- I am at peace with my surroundings
- I trust more and fear less
You can do a visualization as well. Imagine a red wheel at the base of your spine. Imagine it spinning. As it is spinning, imagine it growing brighter. The Base chakra is connected to the color red, so also try wearing red clothes or eating red foods.You can also do crystal therapy by wearing it or carrying it on you. Place it on your body while you are lying down. If you are laying on your back, place it between your legs. Laying on your stomach, place it at the root of your spine. Crystals to use for Chakra healing can include hematite, bloodstone, garnet, ruby, carnelian, red jasper and smokey quartz.
Another thing to try is aromatherapy. Now that essential oils are so accessible, it will be easy to find a large variety. The Base Chakra is associated with our sense of smell. Use a diffuser, candles, or incense sticks. Also really handy would be a roll-on, or even taking a bath. Some scents to try are vetiver, cedarwood, rosewood, patchouli, ginger and cloves.
Because the Base Chakra is rooted to our groundness, try walking around outside with your shoes off. Listen to the sounds and smells around you. Absorb the energies of being outside. Also try Yoga, not only is it relaxing and good for you, but it can also help balance your Chakras.
You can also use binaural beats, listening to thunder or even repeating the Bija Mantra “Lam”. Repeating Lam during meditation out loud creates a energy vibration that activates and balances your Base Chakra.
Once your Base Chakra is balanced, you will start showing self confidence. You will feel more easy going, less angry, and feel less worried about your survival needs. You will feel more grounded and connected to reality.
